James Oglethorpe(1696-1785) James Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696 to Theophilus and Eleanor Oglethorpe. He married a lady named Elizabeth. In 1714 he entered Corpus Christi College at Oxford University. As a former British General, he led a group of colonists from England to the New World. They landed in what is now called Savannah, Georgia in early 1733. He is the founder of the colony of Georgia which he named after King George, II. He died June 30, 1785. It is not known how he died.
Georgia was the southern most colony. It was south of South Carolina and north of Spanish Florida.
