Jacob Isaacksz van Ruisdael, was born c. 1629, in Haarlem, Netherlands. When he was young, he studied painting with his uncle and his father, who both painted landscapes. Iniitially, he was undervalued as a painter, and was quite poor. But now is known for his prolific landscape paintings.
Though Ruisdael, had a connection to Judaism, he was not Jewish. The paintings that he did of the Jewish Cemeteries were meant to be interpreted as representaions of life. The cemetary, was a symbol.
