Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was born on January 31, 1919 in Cairo, Ga. From his childhood, Jackie was very athletic. While in high school, Jackie played football, baseball, basketball, and ran track. He participated in these four sports in college, and became known as one of the best athletes in the country. In 1945, Jackie joined the Kansas Monarchs, a Negro Baseball League because the Major Leagues were segregated at the time. This would soon come to an end when Jackie met Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who wanted Jackie to be a player on his team. In 1947, Jackie officially became a player for the Brooklyn Dodgers and also became the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues! Jackie had a rough first season, but made it through with his courage and support from those who adored him. Jackie Robinson was an extraordinary player and went on to have the "Rookie of the Year" award named in his honor and he entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962!
