Jackie Robinson

Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He became the first African-American to play in baseball's major leagues. Robinson was raised in relative poverty by a single mother. Also, he attended John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College, where he played four sports: football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was named the region's Most Valuable Player in baseball in 1938.From 1942 to 1944, Robinson served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. During boot camp in 1944 in Fort Hood, Texas, Robinson was arrested and court-martialed after refusing to give up his seat and move to the back of a segregated bus when ordered to by the driver.

Accomplishments

-Broke the color barrier in major league baseball in 1947 by becoming the first African-American player.-Led the National League in stolen bases in 1947 and 1949.-Selected as the National League MVP in 1949-Had a career batting average of .311 with the Dodgers, .333 in All-Star games Led the Dodgers to six World Series and one World Series Championship in a 10-year span.-Established the Jackie Robinson Construction Company in 1970 to build housing for families with low incomes.

Lasting Impact

Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
