Tolkien's writing was strongly influenced by Anglo- Saxon Literature, Germanic and Norse Mythologies, Finnish Mythology, the Bible, and Greek Mythology.

Tolkien was persuaded by a former student to publish The Hobbit, a book that Tolkien had written for his own children, in 1937. This led to his sequals The Lord of the Rings Trilogy becoming published in the early 1950's.
