The novel, Iqbal, by Francesco D’Adamo, takes place in the 1990’s. It takes place during the Industrial Era when adults needed children to do their work for them. Adults and bosses used children for their work because of their “small hands and agile fingers”. The main character Iqbal was a child laborer working for a master who was a terrible person, a person who kept the children in the worst of the worst conditions. Iqbal was soon to be the person who stopped child labor and was soon to be a life saver and a hero. But in in 1995, something tragic happened; Iqbal was shot and killed on Easter Sunday at the age of 12. The group of people that caused the death of Iqbal is now known to be the “Carpet Mafia”. The “Carpet Mafia” is a group of people that kill escapists of carpet factories. In the result of the “Carpet Mafia’s” practices, there has been a great impact on child labor, and it is a worldwide problem that takes place in many countries.

The “Carpet Mafia” is a group of people that kill escapists of carpet factories. In the result of the “Carpet Mafia’s” practices, there has been a great impact on child labor, and it is a worldwide problem that takes place in many countries.

The “Carpet Mafia’s” practices had a major impact on places and people around the world, from school children in Sweden protesting about child labor, to the President of the United States canceling orders for imports with the label, “bonded child laborers”, on them. I can’t believe that such a group of people could treat children this way and then to kill and brutally hurt the ones that have escaped or try to speak out against it. I also learned about a very important figure that was in the child labor industry, Iqbal Mahish. Iqbal was a child laborer who was sent to the the carpet factories because of debt that his father couldn’t pay. Iqbal had many dreams in the carpet factory. HIs biggest one was escaping and freeing all the enslaved children. With hard work and lots of effort, Iqbal had accomplished his goal and freed hundreds of children. He went and told his story to people all around the world and was on a journey to stop child labor until he was senselessly murdered. I believe that child labor is a major problem that countries have and if people are not aware of it, it can get out of hand. It needs to be recognized and stopped. The “Carpet Mafia” and other organizations have had a major impact on the children of child labor at home and around the world. It’s time to follow in Iqbal’s footsteps and do something about it.
