Covalent bonding is a chemical bond when 2 atoms share pairs of electrons. There are polar and nonpolar covalent bonds. 2 Hydrogen atoms are an example of a nonpolar covalent bond because they equally share electrons. Water is an example of a polar covalent bond because since the uneqaully share electrons.

Ionic bonding is the complete transfer of valence electrons between atoms and generates two oppositely charged atoms. An example is sodium chloride, or salt.

The valence electrons is what determines what kind of bond the atoms will need to have to combine. If one atom has 4 or less valence electrons it is going to want to combine with an atom with 4 or more valence electrons. The farther to the right on the periodic table the atoms are, the more valence electrons they have.
