Iodine is important in organic chemistry and very useful in medicine and photography. Lack of iodine is the cause of goitre (Derbyshire neck). The deep blue colour with starch solution is characteristic of the free element.

How did it get it's name?From the Greek word iodes, violet. You can Find it in seaweed.
The melting point=113.7 ºC boiling point=184ºC. density=4.94g/cm cubed non-metal solid at room temperature.
