Inventions of Early America

The Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It could clean 50 times more cotton than by hand. One would think that farmers would then not need so many slaves. But because the demand for cotton grew, so did the need for more slaves.

In 1831, Cyrus McCormick developed the horse-drawn mechanical reaper. John Deere invented the steel plow in 1837. With this and other developments, farmers were able to grow more crops more cheaply.

The Erie Canal was finished in 1825. It connected Lake Erie with the Hudson River. Goods could move back and forth with ease. Business boomed!

In 1807, Robert Fulton's Clermont steamed up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany in a mere 30 hours. The Age of Steam had begun.
