Invention of Pre sliced Bread

Melissa Avery

Pre sliced bread was invented in 1928 when Otto Frederick Rohwedder's creation of the bread slicer. At first manny large corporations scoffed at the invention, assuming that it was completely fine to continue selling whole loaves and consumers cutting the bread themselves. However, the Chillicothe Baking Co. (Chillicothe, Missouri)had faith in this new idea and incorporated Otto's bread slicer into their factory and in 1928 put the first pre sliced loaf of bread on the shelf. Consumers became enthralled and the bread quickly gained popularity and by 1929 almost every baking company in the United States was selling pre sliced bread.
