Intro to Plate Tectonics
3. The Two Types of Crust:Click on the image to learn more.
1. First lets review the layers of the Earth by clicking here.
2. Then answer this question on the bottom of NB pg.25: What clues do geologists use to learn about the layers of the Earth we can't see directly? Click on the Earth.
4. Remember, the lithosphere is made up of the crust and a portion of the upper mantle.
7. Finally watch the video to see how these convection currents in the mantle cause the plates of the lithosphere to very slowly move and collide.
7. Finally watch the video to see how these convection currents in the mantle cause the plates of the lithosphere to very slowly move and collide.
5. The Earth's Lithosphere is broken into many plates. Use the map below to label the plates on your map(NB pg. 26).
6.The mantle is made of hot rock that flows like a liquid. The rock is heated by the core, becoming less dense, it rises. Then, as it reaches the crust it cools, becoming denser and sinks. This process is repeated over ' over.Click here to see the convection currents in the mantle in action. Then watch the video on the left to see a demonstration of this phenomenon.Draw the drawing on the board!!
