"Gallien wondered whether he'd picked up one of those crackpots from the lower forty-eight who came north to live out ill-considered Jack London fantasies. Alaska has long been a magnet for dreamers and misfits, people who think the unsullied enormity of the Last Frontier will patch all the holes in their lives." (page 4)

Into the Wild - Chapters 1 and 2

"S.O.S. I NEED YOUR HELP. I AM INJURED, NEAR DEATH, AND TOO WEAK TO HIKE OUT OF HERE. I AM ALL ALONE, THIS IS NO JOKE. IN THE NAME OF GOD, PLEASE REMAIN TO SAVE ME. I AM OUT COLLECTING BERRIES CLOSE BY AND SHALL RETURN THIS EVENING. THANK YOU, CHRIS MCCANDLESS. AUGUST? " (page 12)

August, 1992 - I had high expectations. I was fearless. I was ill-equipped for such a journey but I didn't care. I was Alexander Supertramp, someone Jack London would respect. I did what I set out to do. I am in the Alaskan wilderness, living off the land, having to answer to no one. This was my destiny. I know who I am now. I am Chris McCandless. It's time to go home.

Chapter 1. Alex's last ride before his journey, Jim Gallien, knew he was not prepared to brave the Alaskan wilderness and tried to warn him about the dangers he was about to face. Alex, an obvious non-conformist, thought he could overcome anything. Gallien should have trusted his initial instinct and told the Alaska State Troopers about Alex.

Chapter 2. In the beginning, Alex romanticized the wild as Jack London had in his books. In a few short months, Alex's fantasy turned into harsh reality. He went into the wild as Alexander Supertramp and came out as Chris McCandless.
