Why did US drop the bomb?

Did the bomb create effects that US were looking for?

Marked thermal burns on soldier exposed within 1 km of ground zero. His waist was protected by a thick waist band. (Impact, p. 96, Plate 22)

Exposed skin of a woman seared by intense heat was blown away by fierce wave (but white blouse deflected the intense heat). Most of those suffering severe burns over more than 20% of their bodies died on the spot or a short time later.

What were the effects of atomic bomb?

Yes, they did. Even though they had many reasons of dropping the bomb, their main goal was to end the war with minimal US casualties. Because they dropped the bomb in Japan, which is very far away from US, US did end the war with minimal injuries of US soldiers.
