Some important men met at a building called, "The State House," to write a letter to the king of Great Britain. In the letter they said that they wanted to have independence, which means freedom to make their own rules.

-our country was not even a country!Instead of states we had colonies (13 of them!)We were owned by a country called Great Britain. We had to follow all of their laws and pay them taxes. The men and women that lived in the colonies did not like it!
