The Immune System
The immune system is able to recognize new challenges, adapt to those challenges and remember what it has learned. It is constantly finding, targeting and eliminating bacteria and viruses. It even kills the body's own cells when they show signs of infection or cancerous development.
Vocabulary
epidermis
Examples:Hepatitis A and BMeasles Rabies
Locations like the tonsils and appendix where the body deciphers which foreign substances are food and which are pathogens help to create normal immune function.
Consists of the blood vessels and heart and is a major pathway used by immune cells to travel through the body.
It is through the movement of muscles that lymph is moved throughout the body. In order to maintain a healthy immune system it is important to exercise regularly. Blood cells, including immune cells grow and mature in the long flat bones in the body before entering the circulatory and lymph system.
1. non specific barriers such as skin, natural flora and mucus membranes. 2. non specific white blood cells such as phagocytes inflamatory response interferons3. specific white blood cells such as B and T cells and antigens.
thymus
outer layer of skin made up of several layers that cover and protect the dermis
mucus
a gland that secrets thymosin, a hormone vital to the body's immune system; function as both an endocrine gland and a lymphatic organ.
saliva
cilia
clear, slimy, lubricating substance consisting mostly of mucins and water that coats and protects mucous membranes.
clear liquid secreted into the mouth by the salivary glands consiting of water, mucin, protein and enzymes.
Fine hairlike projections from certain cells such as those in the respiratory tract that sweep in the unison and help to sweep away fluids and particles.
white blood cells
formed elements present in blood; fight infection and protect the body through various mechanisms.
antibodies
large y-shaped proteins. They are recruited by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses.
Lines of Defense
Vacines help develop immunity by immitating the infection, but this "immitation" infection does not cause illness. It does however cause the immune system to develop the same response as it does in a real infection, so the body can recgonize and fight the vaccine preventable disease in the future.
Vacines.
Circulatory System
Musculoskeletal System
Digestive System
Fun Facts
1. The immune system is powered by five liters of Blood and Lymph 2. A single drop of blood can contain 25,000 white blood cells3. During stress a serie of events release cortisol, a hormone from the adrenal gland that helps your body cope.4.Laughter is good for your immune system by releasing dopamine and other chemicals to reduce stress and help your immune system work properly.
