Igbo Music

Like in America we have classifications of music so do the Igbo people. They are classified in 5 ways.1: Iyo- to shake, rattle, or clap together2: Iku- to hit a hard surface with a beater3: Iti- to hit a membrane with a hand or a beater4: Ikpo- to pluck or bow5: Ifu- to blow on

Music Music is a cultural expression and very traditional. In Africa, music plays important roles in the lives of the people. Its major characteristic is that it has function. The various stages the life of an individual and the life of society are all marked with music.

Igbo Music

This is an Okike. The Okike is made out of a elephant tusk and it is used by an ozo. An ozo is a person in the village with a higher rank in society and they are respected

To the Igbo people music is a very important part in society and I think in America that is also true. The Igbo people show their indentity with their music and their culture. I use music to refelct my personality and so do the Igbo people. Music plays a part in their life especially in special events.

Music is used in special activities like; rituals, spiritual and cultural events as well as births of new born and funerals. Today, they are also used with church choirs like we use music.

Many musical instruments like the Okike, Ọdu-mkpalọ and Enenke are all horns made out of bones or horns of wild animals.
