Hurricanes MS

A severe cyclonic storm with heavy winds sometimes reaching up to 100-200 mph.!!

Above, is sattelite radar of Hurricane Katrina... one of the worst hurricanes yet to hit the U.S.!!

What is a hurricane??

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes form when warm, moist air rises up from the ocean, leaving less air closer to the surface. Air in other areas, with higher pressure, mixes with the lower air pressure, causing the warm air to cool off. As the air cools off, the water in the air forms clouds. This is the formation of a hurricane.

Why are they named?

Hurricanes are named to prevent confusion, when more than one storm is being followed at the same time. Hurricanes are named when they reach tropical storm strength with winds of 39mph.
