HUNTING FEATURES OF OWLS

HUNTING FEATURES OF OWLSby Kayla Dominguez

OWLS EYESIGHT *Owls like the Geat Horned Owl have great eye sight and can see in complete darkness , like owls can see straight ahead and can not move their eyes like humas can, they need flexible necks, so they can turn their entire head naerly every direction. * Their eyes can see in a 360 degree angle in fact their eyes are not sphare like humans ,but there eyes are elongated tubes. They are held in place by bony structures in the skull called sclerotic rings. As most owls are active at night, their eyes must be very efficient at collecting and processing light, because if they doun't they could not servie a day in their habitat. These owls have less eyesight then a regular pigeon in fact the differens is that regular pigeon have simillar eyesight like humans and also regular pigeon has more angle than an owl. (Chart shows the diference oof owl and pigeon)

OWLS HEARING*Some people say that owls ears are on top of their head for example the Great Hourd Owl, but there ears are located at the sides of the head, behind the eyes, and are covered by feathers . The ears opening has a valve, called an operculum covering it. *Their ears are not like pigeon their ears are acute at certain frequencies enabling it to hear even the slightest movement of their prey in leaves or undergrowth.*Owls have a very pronounced facial disc, which acts like a "radar dish", guiding sounds into the ear opening. The shape of the disc can be altered when using special facial muscles.Their ears can track their prey underground and even in thick snow. The ears are also used to track their preys motion. The translation of the left, right,up and down signals are combined instantly in the owls brain which is different of other types of bird spices. The owl have more haering than a regulal pigeon. In fact a pigeon has less hearing than an owl.

HUNTING *Owls hunt small mammals, insects, reptiles, adphibians and other small animals. *Owls generally have a hunting territory away from their daytime roost. All owls have a specie adaptations that help them hunt.Keen eyesight help them to locate where their prey is.Sensitive, directional hearing helps locate concealed prey. Some species can even hunt in complete darkness using sound alone to guide them to a successful kill.An owls flight is silenced by special wing or feathers, that muffle the sound of the air rushing over the surface of the wing. That alouse to an owl to steal, taking their victims by surprise. It also helps owls to listen for prey movements while still flying. When their soring down to catch prey they take out their talons and grave their prey from the ground. As they fly back up they go to a neirby tree, they eat it and when their finished they cough up the bounes and fur ,then leave to their home way abouve the tree.

OWLS WINGS *Many species of owls have differnt feather designed, they will have them around the face, ear-flap and in ther bills. The feet and bill have filoplumes that work like feelers, to help the owl react to things they touch, such as prey.*The most unique adaptation of owl feathers is the comb-like or fimbriate leading edge of the primary wing feathers referred to as fluting or fimbriae. *With a pigeon in flight, air rushes over the surface of the wing, creating turbulence, which makes a gushing noise. With an owl's wing the comp-like feathers edge breaks down the turbulencie in groups called micro-turbulences.This effectively muffles the sound in the air rushing over the wing surface and allows the owl to fly silently. There is also an alternate theory that the flutings actually shift the sound energy created by the wingbeats to a higher frequency spectrum, where most creatures cannot hear.
