The Yellpstone Hotspot created the eastern Snake River Plain through a succession of caldera forming eruptions. The hotspots most recent eruption took place 640,000years ago and created the Lava Creek Tuff and the Yellowtsone Caldera.

The Snake River Plain was formed from the hotspot. It traces the path over the North American Plate to the Yellowstone Hotspot now located in the Yellowstone National Park The plain is didvide into 3 sections: western, central, and eastern.
