The main characters are Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni. Other charcters in the book include the other campers: Squid, Armpit, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zig Zag, the people in charge at the camp: the Warden, Mr. Sir, Madame Zeroni, Eyla Yelants, Mr. and Mrs. Yelnats, Sam, Kate Bartlow, Charles Walker and Clyde Livingston

The story is set in Camp Greenlake, a juvenile detention camp. The boys there are forced to dige large holes in the dirt everyday, and Stanley suspects that they are looking for something not merley to "build character".

- Eyla Yelnats great-great-grandfather breaks his promise to Madame Zeroni. This results in a curse-Stanley Yelnats is believed to have stolen Clyde Livingstons shoes; he is sent to Camp Greenlake-Zero and Stanley run away from camp. Zero is hurt; Stanley carries him up the mountain. He sings a song that his father would always sing to him-The curse is broken; Stanley fufills the promise his great-great-grandfather made to Madame Zeroni. Zero is her great-great-great-grandson.

The main conflict is that Stanley Yelnats got blamed for a crime he didnt commit, so he is arrested and sent to Camp Greenlake. He must also free his family from the curse that was placed upon the Yelnats because of his great-great-grandfather, Elya Yelnats who broke his promise to Madame Zeroni.

Stanley and Zero get caught back at camp digging a hole. The boys find a suitcase with treasure inside, which belonged to Stanley Yelnats l, Stanley's great-great-grandfather. Stanley is found innocent and no record of Zero is found so he is also released. The curse is broken and the boys and their familes become wealthy and they live happily ever after. Camp Greenlake is shut down.
