Washington State Ecosystem: Hoh Rain Forest
In the Hoh Rain Forest, biotic and abiotic factors work together to aid in the forest's stability. The rainforst recieves up to twelve feet of rain each year. The forest has up to 12-14 feet of precipitation annually. The weather in Hoh rain forest is often referred to as a marine type climate with cool summers and mild winters. The forest contains such biotic factors as the Montane Shrew and the Beaver. Also it has the Subalpine Fir and the Western Red-cedar. All of these living organisms work together to support a healthy thriving community that has been growing strong for thousands of years.
Biotic and Abiotic Characteristics
1) Ferns, moss, and lichens are able to gather nutruents while growing on trees2) Growing higher on trees allows for more sunlight and shelter by the tree canopy.3) The height of growth is raised above the browse-line of larger herbivores.4) Many animals use camouflage to hide from predators.5) Most mammals grow a thicker fur in the winter.6) Some animals, like the Olympic Stoat, can hunt small prey on the ground and escape predators by climbing trees.
Hoh Adaptations
Humans are responsible for the major threats to the Hoh Rainforest. People who visit leave trash and make their own hiking trails. Also pollution has a devastating effect on both biotic and abiotic factors. From smog and trash which can harm the animals to climate change which effects drought conditions, the damage to the ecosystem is devastating.
