HIV/AIDS Presentation

Discovered officially in 1983 by Dr. Robert Gallo and Dr. Luc Montagnier. Originated in Central and West Africa. In 1983, scientists realized mothers could pass the disease to their children. The disease began around mid to late 1970s. By 1984, there were 3,665 deaths in the U.S. caused by AIDS. In 1988, the WHO declared December 1st World AIDS day.

Although there is no cure for AIDS, people can live long lives with this disease by watching what they eat, staying healthy, and taking drugs that can reduce and greatly slow the disease's progresses.

AIDS is caused by a virus called Human Immunodeficiency Virus. There is no Domain or Kingdom for this disease because it is a virus and only living things can be classified into Domains and Kingdoms. Viruses are not living.

Caused By



Can be transmitted through sexual contact, drug use, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, occupational exposure, blood transfusions, and organ transplants.



Flu- like symtoms, weight loss, fever or night sweats, pain in abdomenal region, fatigue and persistant diarrea.

The incubation period of HIV is 8 to 24 months. The mortality rate of AIDS was 76 percent for one year, and 46 percent for five years. Fun Facts:2.1 million adolescents were living with HIV in 2013.AIDS related deaths increased by 50 percent from 2005 to 2012.In 2013, there were 240,000 new HIV infections among children in low-income countries.
