The Holocaust

The Holocaust was the slaughter of six million Jews by the Nazis during WW2. Two out of every three Jews were killed. The Holocaust survivor Abel Herzberg has said: "There were not six million Jews murdered; there was one murder, six million times."

"Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who do not want to fight in this world of eternal struggle do not deserve to live."– Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler was born in Austria on April 20, 1889. His younger brother died, leaving Hitler detached and introverted. He was accepted into the war in 1914. He was decorated for bravery and recieved many other awards. Hitler was arrested for his rising speaches against things such as The Treaty of Versailles. While he was in jail, he wrote a book called Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"). This book laid out his plans to make Germany one society based on race.

The first Nazi concentration camp was started in 1933. There were two types of camps: Death camps, and Work camps. If you were at a death camp, you had no chance of survival. Work camps actually came you the opportunity to live. Either way, both camps were designed to destroy Jews. The Jews were given numbers. They were never called by names.

Work CampsThere was many different jobs you can do in work camps. Some worked in the fields and factories, while others made food, clothes, and weapons for the soldiers. Some Jews even had to dig graves and bury their own kind.

Death CampsThere was a total of six death camps. They sent the Jews there with one purpose: To kill them. The most popular means of killing were the gas chambers.

5,830,000 Jews were killed

Why did Hitler hate the Jews?? Hitler believed that the Germans were superior to all other races. He saw the Jews as a threat to the purity of the Germans. The other way to get rid of this threat, was the exterminate them.

Why didn't the Jews fight back?? Most of the Jews were in shock. They didn't think that it was possible for Hitler to whipe out their entire race. By the time they realized how serius the situation was, they were to tired emotionally and physically to fight back. They were sitting ducks, just waiting to be killed.

All in all, the Holocaust lasted 12 years. Power was slowly taken from Hitler and in January of 1945, Auschwitz, the biggest Nazi death camp, was liberated. At the end of the War, there was somewhere between 50,000 to 100,000 Jewish survivors. In April of 1945, Adolf knew he had been defeated. Whether out of cowardice or fear of punishment, Hitler killed himself. The nightmare was finally over.
