What is the Caste System?

The Caste System is social structure that divides different groups of people into ranked categories, which is different social classes. Caste members must lived, ate, married, and worked with their own group that shows the major divisions or contents of life that based on Hinduism. It shows similarity of dividing social class with Feudalism in Japan, and Confucianist system of four occupation in China

Importance of the Caste System

Caste System played significant role through the history both politically and religiously. Caste System formed social hierarchy involved in Hinduism; based on ideas of social purity and influences all social contact. As the Caste System evolved in India, the caste system acted as significant part of the Hindu religion and government. Hindu government socially divided people into four groups and each groups had specific function. The caste system kept ordered civilization that also organized economic role by specific function. Caste System did not just remained in one region, Caste system spread through Indian Ocean Basin and world. Caste system was promoted by temples, and educational system that led to expansion from north to south of Indian basin. As caste system expanded, it also cause of economic development that was developed subcastes, called "jati," which is similar to workers' guilds. Caste system accomated social changes by trade and economic development. As Caste System spread throughout the world, Turkish and Muslim pursued opportunities in India and gained recognition as distinct group under the Caste System. It also established codes of conduct: regulation of behavior and guidance in dealing with members of castes

Social The caste system influenced hugely in society by determination of social position. In each caste group, the restrictions and privileges clearly defined rights and duties of people. These caste system developed social distinctions in Indian society with their differential rankings, liabilities and rights in legal proceedings.Cultural The caste system was originally developed from Hinduism belief and to further developed the Vedas. As the caste system influenced hugely in society, it created more readers of the Vedas and could developed their Hinduism. As the caste system continued, Indian people also had belief that people's social classes were determined by birth, not the profession.

At the top of the caste system were the Brahmin and the Kshatriya. The Brahmin were the priests, teachers, and judges who understood dharma (spiritual laws tha govern universe). Most of the Brahmin lived apart from the rest of the society, such as temple. The Kshatriyas were warriors, who made everyday decision and ran the government.

The Vaishyas were skilled farmers and merchants. They occasionally had leadership positions in local villages. The unskilled workers were of the Sudras caste. Members of the Sudras caste often worked on the farms of the people of higher castes.
