History of the Sacrament of Penance

History of the Sacrament of Penance

Sinners began to attend private conversation with monks to get advice and diminsh sinful habits. This was the beginning of the present Rite of Penitence. Originally these consultations were not punishment, but merely advice; that soon changed.

The Order of Penitents is devised so that sinners can be accepted back into the Church. It involved confession of one's sins, penance for one's sin then absolution and forgiveness could only be completed once in a lifetime.

The Order of Penitents was slightly altered so that the Absolution (the placing of hands and declaration of God's forgiveness) was carried out immediately after confession, and penance is completed later.

Modern Rite of Penitence is established and the sacrament was called Confession. The penance was lightened, often to a brief prayer and the ritual became completely private between sinner and priest.

There was dissatisfaction with the sacrament so the ritual was altered yet again, so that the focus was more on reconcilition even though the formal name is the Rite of Penance.
