History Of The Atom

J.J Thomson discovered the electron. He also developed the plum pudding model of the atom.

John Dalton Formed the Atomic Theory. It states that all matter is composed of small, indestructible particles called atoms. Atoms are all the same and all have equal atomic weight.

Niels Bohr created the Bohr atomic model. It said that atoms atoms absorb or emit radiation only when the electrons abruptly jump between allowed, or stationary, states. He also stated that electrons move around the nucleus in orbits that are successively large.

History of the Atom

400 B.C.

Democritus stated that all matter is made up of atoms. Atoms are eternal, invisible, and so tiny they can't be split. Atoms completely fill up the space they are in.

Antoine Lavoisier created the formula for the conservation of matter in chemical reactions, and distinguished the difference between an element and compound.

Lavoisier was born in Paris, France on Agust 26, 1743. He was the son of an attorney at the Parlement of Paris. Lavoisier recieved a degree in Law but never was a lawyer. In 1771 , at age 28, he married a 13-year old.

Ernest was born on August 30, 1871 in Nelson, New Zealand. He had 11 siblings. He was a research student under J.J Thomson. He died on October 19, 1937. His ashes are buried west of Newton's tomb and by Lord Kelvin.

Niels was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 7, 1885. His father was a professor of Physiology. Niels had a Doctors Degree in Physics. Like Ernest, he was under J.J Thomson's guidance. He died in Copenhagen on November 18, 1962.

James won The Nobel Prize in Physics 1935.His prize motivation was "for the discovery of the neutron".Chadwick was born on 20 October 1891, in Manchester, United Kingdom. He died on24 July 1974, in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

1930-"Herbert Becker and Walter Bothe sent alfa particles (helium nuclei) against beryllium, strong penetrating radiation was emitted, there was a hypothesis that this could be electromagnetic radiation of high energy. " In 1932, James Chadwick showed that a neutral particle with the mass of a proton was emitted. The particle dicovered was named a neutron.

J.J Thomson was born in Manchester on December 18, 1856. He had a daughter and a son. Thomson went to Owens College and Trinity College. He won the Adams Prize in 1884 He died on August 30, 1940

John was born into A Quaker family on September 6, 1766 in Cumberland, England. He started to teach when he was 12. He was a teacher and a public lecturer. Dalton died on July 27, 1844.

Democritus was born in Abdera, Greece. His mentor originally came up with the atomic theory. He published over 70 books.

Ernest Rutherford conducted a goldfoil experiment. He used the results to state that the mass of an atom were in a tiny positively-charged ball at the center of the atom.
