A few aeronauts made daring, uncontrolled flights in lighter-than-air balloons, filled with either hot air or hydrogen gas.
In Yorkshire, Sir George Cayley made the concept of the modern-day Aeroplane in 1799.
Wilbur and Orville Wright, the Wright brothers, experimented with aerodynamic surfaces to control an airplane in flight . Their work leads them to make the first controlled, sustained, powered flights on December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The first jet-powered aircraft used for transport, started to transport passengers from London to South Africa.
Lawrence Sperry demonstrates an automatic gyrostabilizer in New York. This shows that it doesn't need a human pilot to stabilize it.

A British scientist, Sir Robert Watson, made the first radar for meteological purposes. In World War II, it was used to detect opposing airplanes.
Burt Rutan, an aircraft designer, constructs an airplane known as 'Voyager". It flew 26,000 miles nonstop in 9 days. It had two center line engines and weighed less than 2,000 pounds.
