Located in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, underneath the cortical surface. Its structure is divided into two halves which lie in the left and right sides of the brain.

1. Brain scan evidence shows that healthy people experience a drop in hippocampal volume of about 15 percent as they age.2. The hippocampus is involved with long-term memory, but not short-term memory.
