Hieronymus Bosch
Bosch was born as Jheronimous Anthonissen van Aken in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. He married Alety Goyaerts den Meerven around 1480. He was also a very religious Catholic, and most of his works depict sin and human moral failings.
1450
Bosch is born in 's-Hertogenbosch.
"The Garden of Earthly Delights" is a triptych oil painting (done on oak) that depicts three different scenes. The panel to the left shows Adam and Eve with God. The middle panel shows many human beings who are very self-indulgent. The right panel shows Hell, where it is likely that the greedy humans will be sent for eternity. This painting represents the importance of religion in the Renaissance. The middle panel can also represent the value of Secularism, because the humans are more concerned with material items than religion.
"Christ Carrying the Cross" was a painting done on a panel of wood. It portrays Jesus carrying the cross with many grotesque-looking people around him. No one pays any attention to Jesus as the struggles because they are too preoccupied with their own activities. This shows their secularism. Rather than being preoccupied with Jesus, they only care about themselves.
Much of his background is unknown, including his education. It is possible that his art skills were taught to him by his father or grandfather, since they were both artists as well.
"The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things" was an oil painting on wood panels completed around 1500 or later. The 4 small circles deatailed "Death of a Sinner", "Judgement", "Hell", and "Glory". Surronding that is a larger circle depicting the 7 deadly sins. In the center of the larger circle it is said to represent the eye of God, a "pupil" where Christ can be emerging from his tomb. This painting shows the importance of religion and humanism. They can be rewarded for all the good things they have done in their lives as long as they have not commited one of the 7 sins.
There are no dates on his paintings.
His father, brother, sister, four of his uncles, and his grandfather were all painters.
