Hernando Cortes

Hernando Cortes was born in 1485, in the city of Medellin, Spain. Hernando was an only child, the son of Martin Cortes de Monroy and Catalina Pizarro Altramino. Althought Cortes belonged to a noble family, his family was not rich. When Cortes was 12 years old, he went to live with his father's family, and studied Latin, grammar, and law at a university near by. After studying, Cortes went on to sailing and exploring places, and became a conquistidator. Later in his life, he and his men had conquered the Aztecs, and set sail for home. Shortly after coming back home and being treated a hero, Cortes goes to Mexico looking for gold. Then, he makes his last arrival at Spain, and moves to Seville, Spain. He later dies there on December 2, 1547, at the age of 62.

Hernando Cortes had a fierce battle with the Tlaxcalans in September of 1519. He had told people that his few hundred men and him had gone against 150,ooo Tlaxcalan warriors, but they had won the fight. After successfully winning the fight, Cortes and the Tlaxcalans traveled to Tenochtitlan. A mere 8 days after Cortes and the Tlaxcala people arrive at Tenochtitlan, Cortes makes the Aztec ruler, Montezuma, his prisoner. Cortes, his men, and the Tlaxcalans had a long and hard battle with the Aztecs. On August 13, 1521, the Aztecs surrender and give up Tenochtitlan, resulting in Cortes conquering the Aztecs.

Because of all of Cortes's hard work, Spain was able to establish New Spain in 1522, a colony in Mexico.

Lasting Impact

This is an image of a compass. Compasses were use by many explorers and sailers to help them navigate the rough and endless seas. There would be a pointer in the compass that's visible, and due to the Earth's magnetic force, that pointer will always point to the direction that is north. When sailers and explorers knew which way was north, they would be able to determine which way is south, east, and west, helping them navigate.
