Hernan Cortes

(1485-1547)

Moved to Cuba and became the secretary to Diego Velaquez and later owned a ranch in Cuba.

Born in Medlin, Spain under a highly respected family.

He tricked the Aztecs into giving him a lot of gold when he first arrived in Mexico. One of the treasures he found was chocolate.

Cortes was put in charge of an expedition to the mainland of Mexico. This was something that he had wanted to do for many years. At the last minute, Governor Velazquez became worried he ordered Cortes not to sail. Cortes disobeyed the order and set sail anyway.
