Cavendish attended Cambridge University from 1749 to 1753,despite the time he had spent studying he left without a degree.Exceedingly shy and retiring, Cavendish was sociable only with his scientific friends.The only existing portrait of him was sketched surreptitiously.
Henry Cavendish, (born Oct. 10, 1731, France and died Feb. 24, 1810, London, Eng.), was a bright minded natural philosopher and also the greatest experimental and theoretical English chemist and physicist of his age.Besides actually there is a derby school called Henry Cavendish Derbyshire School.
Curiosity
Cavendish was distinguished for his great accuracy and precision in his research on the composition of atmospheric air, the properties of different gases, the synthesis of water, the law governing electrical attraction and repulsion, a mechanical theory of heat, and calculations of the density (and hence the weight) of the Earth. His experiment to weigh the Earth was a breakthrough and has been succesfully aproved and come to be known as the Cavendish experiment.
Cavendish Experiment
Cavendish was a shy man who was brought up uncomfortable in society and avoided it when he could, altough, he conversed little, always dressed in an old-fashioned suit, and developed no known deep personal attachments outside his family.
He was active in the Council of the Royal Society of London (to which he was elected in 1765). He was very keen on the use of scientific instruments led him to head a committee to review the Royal Society’s meteorological instruments and to help assess the instruments of the Royal Greenwich Observatory
