Henry Box Brown was a 19th century Virginia slave who escaped to freedom at the age 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to Philadelphia, Pennsyslvania abolitionists.

On March 23, 1849, Brown was nailed into a crate 2-feet wide, 3-feet long and 2 ½-feet deep.Brown remained in the box for 27 hours, traveling a distance of 350 miles.
