Thomas Graham first described the concept of diffusion of gases now known as Graham's law. He described crystalloids, colloids, and semi permeable membranes.

By 1944, 15 patients had been dialyzed. Unfortunately, none survived.

George Haas conducted the first 15 minute dialysis session on a human being.

First artificial rotating drum. Covered with cellophane tubing.

A 67 year old woman, and Nazi Collaborator, was treated successfully in 1945 during WWII in the Netherlands by Dutch physician William Johan Kolff. She went on to recover completely from acute renal failure.
