Technological ContributionsDuring WWII, Lamarr wanted to contribute to the allied forces as she strongly opposed the Nazis. She observed plans that attempted to design remote-controlled torpedoes, but these never went into production as the radio-controlled guidance system was easily disrupted. She came up with the idea of distributing the signal over several frequencies to prevent enemy disruption. Describing the idea to composer George Antheil, she asked him to help her construct a "frequency-hopping" device that synchronized the signal's transmitter and receiver. Although their idea wasn't used in WWII, they received much more recognition later in development of maintaining security of military communications and cell phones.
