January 17, 1914-Born in Llera, Tamualipas, Mexico1936- Graduated with a B.A. from the University of Texas1947 - Begins to assist Mexican-American veterans who are unable to get their claims processed by the Veterans Administration.1951- Look Magazine speaks of Dr. Hector P. Garcia's service in the medical field.1966-Through the efforts of Dr. Hector P. Garcia and others, the Texas Poll Tax is cancelled.1977-Dr. Garcia is chosen by President Jimmy Carter as member of U.S. Circuit Judge Nominating Commission for the Western Fifth Circuit Panel.1988-Fights for better living standards in the colonias along the U.S./Mexican border.July 26, 1996 -Died in Corpus Christi

Dr. Garcia was made the first Mexican-American to serve the United States Comission on Civil Rights by President Lyndon B. JohnsonHe was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan (first Mexican-American to receive this honor).

Lasting Impact

Hector Garcia fought for civil and educational rights of Mexican-Americans for half a century.
