Harry S. Turman

When Harry was a boy he never wanted to be president. He had poor eyesight so when he got glasses he didn't play with other boys for fear of breaking them. When he became vice president he thought it was his peak but then on April 12, 1945, he became president. Harry wanted to go to college but in 1901 his father lost all their money and was forced to sell their house. After their house had been sold they had to move to Kansas City. His only hope of going to college was to gain an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. But he failed his physical exam due to his poor eyesight. So he went to work for his family. He had a lot of odd jobs. While he worked in Kansas his family moved to Grandview. There his kin took charge of a farm but soon it was too much to handle so they called Harry for help. When he went to war his sister took over the farm. When he returned he sold the farm and used the money to open a store in town. But before he opened a store he got married to Bess Wallace. His store sold men's clothing, but during the depression, men had not enough money to pay for the fancy clothes. Then he became vice president and, after 83 days, president.

Lasting Impact

Harry S. Truman became president of the United States after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, on April 12, 1945. During his eight years in office, Harry faced big challenges in both foreign and national lands. Harry's policies, especially toward the Soviet Union in the emerging Cold War, would be the foundation of American foreign policy for generations. At home, Harry protected and reinforced Roosevelt's reforms, guided the American economy from a war-time to a peace-time footing, and advanced the cause of African American civil rights. Historians now rank Harry among the nation's best presidents.
