Nelle Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, in 1926. Monroeville became the fictional Maycomb in the novel.After attending the University of Alabama, she went to New York to work. She began writing To Kill a Mockingbird in the mid-1950s and completed it in 1957. An early draft of the novel was titled Atticus, after the main character, a lawyer (as was her father). The novel was published in 1960. Harper Lee was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, America's top literary award, in 1961. Although she began drafting another novel, she did not complete it. To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted for both the stage and motion pictures.The movie won three Academy Awards, including best actor for Gregory Peck.
