Ocean Habitats

There are many different plants and creatures that live in the ocean. They have special adaptations that help them live underwater.

Corals are found in seas around the world. Large colonies are found in some warm, shallow waters, where colonies of millions of coral polyps form vast coral reefs. Reefs are slow-growing; they only grow about an inch each year. Coral animals have tentacles that catch food so the coral can eat.

Sea stars are specially adapted to live in the ocean. They breathe through gills and are covered with tough skin to ward off predators.

Some plants such as seaweed live in the ocean. Seaweeds are adapted to live there because they have leaves that can photosynthesize to make food and they can attach themselves to the ocean floor.
