[2014] Leah Elise Dollinger: Group 16: Oxygen Group

All of the elements in group 16 have 6 valence electrons

The elements in group 16 include: Oxygen (O), Sulfur (S), Selenium (Se), Tellurium (Te), and Polonium (Po).

Can be found pure or combined in nature.

This group and elements are found on the right side of the zigzag line, meaning that they are non-metals, but are not noble gases

Examples of uses:Oxygen- high pressure portable oxygen tanks are used by many medics.Sulfur- 90% pure sulfur is available cheap in any garden center (used to adjust soil pH).Selenium- used in many medicated shampoos becasue it contains some nutrients (but too much of it and it becomes toxic).Tellurium- used in many CDs and is used in the active data recording layer.Polonium- radioactive polontrium foil is used in antistatic brushes as an electron source.

Group 16: Oxygen Group

Physical Properties:The physical properties in this group vary drastically, although some similarities show.<>State of matter is solid at room temperature (with the exception of Oxygen)<>Non-metalsChemical Properties:<>Reactive (although not very reactive with water)

Sulfur Also called brimstone, it oxidizes and is responsible for the characteristic smell of many volcanoes.

Cool Fact! Research shows that even if the tiniest bit of Tellurium can give you garlic breath for a whole month. Yuck!
