In 431 B.C.E. the Spartans turned against the Imperialistic Athenians in a war that lasted nearly 30 years. Athens was finally lost in 404 B.C.E. in a naval battle in which the Persians constructed ships for the Spartans to finally overwhelm the powerful Athenian navy.

Socrates (470-399 B.C.E.) introduced to the world new intellectual currents that shaped the foundation for modern philosophy. His trial and death influenced his disciples to dedicate themselves to the path of knowledge. His most notable student, Plato went on to teach Alexander the Great and began a transition to greater literacy through his writings.
