There is hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures can be from 37 and -40 degrees celcius. The average rainfall is 10 to 35 inches of rain.

It is an open area of country overed by grass.

First order consumer include: bison, pocket gophers, grousers, prairie dogs, and pronghorn

Second order consumers include: meadowlarks, quails, and sparrows.

The hawks, wolves, coyotes, swift foxes, badgers, black-footed ferrets and owls.

It has soils that are nutrient-rich from the growth and decay of deep, many-branched grass roots. There is little variety of animals.

Trees such as cottonwoods, oaks and willows.The grasses include purple needlegrass, bluegrama, buffalo grass, and galleta. Flowers include asters, blazing stars, coneflowers, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, psoraleas, and wild indigos.

During a fire, the root portions of a plant survive to sprout again.The Fork-tailed Drongos feast on fleeing or flame-roasted insects. Small animals frequently survive the fire by digging beneath the soil and remaining there until the flames pass by them.
