[2015] Benji Smith: Go Set A Watchman

Watchman events effects today even. Racism and sexism are still aperent in our society although not as bad as it was in the 1950's. Now it is just the use of derogatory words and occasionally extremist shootings while back then whole towns would mob to remove colored people from their town. In Watchman the KKK had a citizens council in Maycomb which most people of Maycomb attended. Their was also a Pamphlet called The Black Plague which atticus owned. This angered Jean Louise "Do you know the stuff in that thing makes Dr. Goebbels look like a naive little country boy" (102). Thankfully they no longer exist today. The problem today is that many want to end racism but none really try to change. All we have to as a society is each person befriend someone of another race.

I think this story is a 3 out of 5 stars book. Watchman is a good story but it has potential to be better. For starters the storyline did not match up with Mockingbird. Also a big one for me was that Dill and Scout never married (thats just my opinion). A big twist in the story was Atticus became a racist which im going to leave the deatils to descover for yourself. The writing style matched that of Mockingbird, it carried out that sourthern gothic feel. The story had a rather even pace not to fast and not to slow. The plot of Watchman was good their was a lot of plot twist that I liked personally. If only those improvements are made it would be perfect.

Setting and Characters

Henry is Jean Louise's boyfriend. they have been dating sence high school and Henry is pushing for marriage but Jean Louise does not want to. Henry is in many conformed to society and its ways but in no way extreme. Henry is also taken in as Atticus's apprentice in law "Patiently and onobtrusively Attcus had taught him everything Henry knew about his craft" (53).

Maycomb county in the 1950's has grown much sence last mentioned in To Kill a Mockingbird. Maycomb gained a new railway station and a paved road. After World War Two the veterns returned to Maycomb with new ideads of change. An example would be "They painted thier parents' houses atrocious colors; they white washed Maycomb's stores and put up neon signs;...(45).

Jean louise is immature at many parts in the book. With Henry they sometimes act like children on their first date. Jean Louise later has a conflict with herself when the people she grew up with her want her to "act like a lady". This means they want her to be submissive to the men which in her case is Henry. An example of this would be when Henry himself says “Hold your tongue. Don’t argue with a man, especially when you know you can beat him. Smile a lot. Make him feel big. Tell him how wonderful he is, and wait on him.” (16)

Review

Henry

Keep in mind this is not a sequel of Mockingbird. In Watchman Atticus is a racist. Atticus hates negreos and is supporting the Ku Klux Klan which are notorious racist in Maycomb. After a while Jean Louise finally confronted her father and during their argument atticus said "The Negroes down here are still in their childhood as people"(246).
