My New UnderstandingsHow these can be used in the future

3. From reading over the "21 Digital Tools to Build Vocabulary" written by Kimberly Tyson, I learned that vocabulary is important. It influences fluency, comprehension, and student achievement.

5. Reading to a child when they are young is what starts the separation gap between students. Those students just simply had more time with the content than the other students did. (Information from Ch. 1 of the Struggling Reader).

4. The importance of vocabulary knowledge; it basically predicts reading comprehension and fluency, as stated in chapter 4 of the reading.

Realize what to teach now: academic vocabulary, and be open to the curiculum changing throughout my career since it has already done so during my education.

Activities I can use: Paint chip activity (helps children see the subtle differences in words), and the concept circles activity (from the resources in this module) this is when the students pick the words out of the circle that does not belong.

It is our job as teachers to bridge the gap between students abilities, one way to start is to read to the students often.

2. When teaching academic vocabulary you need to teach the "web" of words that goes with it, including synonyms. Furthermore being able to notice the subtle differences in meaning; activity that can do this is the paintchip activity. (from chapter 4 in the textbook)

1. After the reading I learned that tier 2 words are the words that should be taught in the classroom; that is if the child has already mastered enough of the tier 1 words to move on.
