Commercial whaling is the hunting of whales purely for selfish human benefit. It can be dated back all the way to 3000 B.C. People of several different cultures have used the whales for their blubber and meat to provide them with food and material to make oil for lamps, candles, or soap. The economic cost of commercial whaling is a lot of extra money gone towards the hunting, although there is a benefit as far as companies who use whale products are concerned. However, the environmental cost is much more than this. Whales are an essential part of a specific ecosystem, and without as many of them as there should be naturally, that entire ecosystem is effected.
