Little India is an ethnic neighbourhood that has Tamil cultural elements. It is under the Raffles Plan of Singapore where Tamil immigrants will reside under the British policy of ethnic segregation.

It was developed around a former settlement for Tamil convicts.Due to its location beside Seragoon River, cattle were raised there but once other economic activities were developed, this place began to look more like the Little India we know today.
