The Nature of The Unknown Finny and Gene's Relationship Compared to Society's Relationships

"In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take" ( Anthony Robbins).I think the reason Gene and Finny have such a hard relationship is because of this quote. Whenever they're are together it's not for happiness but for competitiveness. There is no way a friendship will last on that basis.

"Whenever a friends succeds, a little something in me dies" (Gore Vidal). This applies to the book, A Seperate Piece because it explains how Gene and Finny's relationship functions. For example, whenever Finny makes a new game or beats a new school record, Gene seems to get more jealous everytime. He forgets and loses all of his great qualities. If this is the case for any friendship there will be no excitement only envy.

In this picture you see a group of people catching someone in a trust fall. Even though we see many negative points in the relationship between Finny and Gene there are also quite a few points that come out positive. For example, Gene is always there to help or support Finny when needed and the other way around. Even if they are going through a fight or just a tough time with eachother, Finny or Gene are always there to back up and help the opposite person. I think in society people are to focused about all the conflicts they are having with a friendship. This prevents people from lending out that helping hand. If everyone in the world would put aside there drama for a few moments and help, our world would run a whole lot smoother.

I constantly see in the story that Gene wears various "masks" in front of Finny. Gene does this so Finny will accept him and see only what he wants to see. When Gene puts on these masks Finny sees this strong, tough and dependable person. But when Gene isn't wearing this mask you see his jealousy appear. Many people in society wear these masks so they can fit into the crowd. They feel like this is the only way they can be accepted. The question is, how many masks can one person wear without blowing their cover?

Through out the book you see how Gene is always comparing himself to Finny. When he does this he sees himself so much lower than Finny. When really if you think about it, they are not equal but they are balanced. Finny is a great athlete but not a very bright student. While on the other hand, Gene is a terrible athlete but is very intelligent. You can see how they balance eachother out. So in this way they are indeed equal. Everyday you see friends comparing just their flaws to other people. When this occurs the person does look like they are lower than the others. When really their strong point might be someone elses weak point. In the end of it you see this balancing act going on.

In this image you see a bike that has lost its training wheels. The training wheels are unable to move on their own now. The training wheels don't have their leader to depend on anymore. In, A Seperate Peace, Gene is like the training wheels and Finny is the bike. Since Gene is losing his leader he is forced to grow up and think for himself. The bike is going to have to learn to pedal by itself. Sometimes the bike goes through a lot of struggling and a lot of frustration to be able to ride again. Just how in society when people lose the people they are depended on so heavily they don't know how to stand alone by themselves and make their own decisions.

"What was I doing up here anyway? Why did I let Finny talk me into stupid things like this? Was he getting some kind of hold over me" (Knowles page 9)?You see here how Gene's jealousy is making him do whatever Finny commands him to do. Even if it could be somewhat dangerous to him. I constantly see people in the world go along with their friends to gain their connection. This occurs even when you may go into a dangerous or life threatening situation.

"[Finny] could get away with anything. I couldn't help envying him that a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little" (Knowles 18).You see here how Gene's jealousy started very littl;e. But once it gets a firm grasp on you there is no hope in turning back and losing your jealousy completely. Many people do believe that a little envy can never hurt. But what they don't understand is once you continuesly act jealous, all you can do is climb higher up on the ladder and get worse.

"I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case" (Knowles 186).This was said by Gene at Finny's funeral. This is a perfect demonstration of the over exaggerated obsession. Gene has lost his leader. Because he was so dependent on Finny, he doesn't know how to act by himself. He can only pick-up on Finny's feelings. This is the point in frienships where it is out of control. A frienship is made of two individuals not one person that two people feed off of.
