Early English settlers looked upon North America as a "New World"
Immigrants who were too poor to pay for their trip across the Atlantic came as indentured servants, they had to work their way to freedom.
Indentured servants could have been treated like a slave, but there was a difference. The servant had some legal rights and a limit to his services.
Most enslaved Africans worked on farms and plantations. Slavery existed, even just a little, throught much of the world at this time.
Quakers became the first group in America to prohibit slavery.
Only men with property could vote. In Boston during the 1770's 70% of men could vote.
Women were not allowed to vote.
Usually girls weren't even allowed to go to school. Women could not vote intil 1920
