Marguerite Ann Johnson, also known as Maya Angelou, was born on April 4th, 1928 in St, Louis, Missouri. At the age of 3 Maya was sent to live with her paternal grandmother in Stamps Arkansas, an event that served as the starting point for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”. Angelou had a rough time living with her grandmother, she quoted: “If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat”, she wrote in one of her books. Maya is one of the best novelists around. Most of her books were/are about her experiences in life, like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Gather Together in My Name, and All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes. Maya isn’t just one of the best novelists around, she is also a performer. She’s won plenty of awards. In 1976 she earned a Tony Award nomination from League of New York Theatres and Producer. Maya has been a big influence on many people, including me.
