[2015] Joslyn Wilson: Global Warming

Fast Facts - Global warming is the increase of Earth's average surface temperature due to greenhouse gases that collect in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up - At the rate our climate is changing, the world will soon be warmer than at any time in th last 10,000 years.

-Global warming is important because it has the potential to destroy the entire Earth and if we didn't have the Earth right now we would all die. We haven't colonized to other planents yet, so until we do yes, this is important. FIVE PRIMARY AIR POLLUTANTS1.) Carbon Monoxide2.) Nitrogen Oxides3.) Sulfur Dioxide4.) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)5.) Particulate Matter (Particulates or PM)A primary pollutant is an air pollutant emitted directly from a source.

Global WarmingJoslyn Wilson

Many scientist believe it will stay warmer due to many carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and cars. Getting warmer will be stressful enough for some people, especially people in Africa and other deserts, but that is not the real problem. When the world gets warmer by a couple degrees, only 1 event will happen and that event will be enough to wipe us all. The polar ice will melt and flood major cities near coasts. Since of the high rise in water and heat, hurricanes will be more often and many polar region animals will have to move to a different place or die.

UV light causes the CFC to break down, releasing a chlorine atom. The chlorine reacts with an ozone molecule to create an oxygen molecule and a chlorine monoxide molecule. The chlorine monoxide molecule then reacts with another ozone molecule, creating two molecules of oxygen and one chlorine atom.

The Movement of carbon from the nonliving environment into living things and back.

Carbon Cycle

CO is an odorless, colorless, poisonous gas. It is produced by the incomplete burning of fossil fuels. Some sources of CO are cars, trucks, buses, small engines etc. CO can cause death in high concentrations. CO interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, slowing reflexes and causing drowsiness. CO can be prevented by Install at least one smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home and near bedrooms and also burning less fossil fuels.

This Is What Global Warming Looks Like

Acid rain is one of the effects of air pollution from burning to much fossil fuels. Acid rain causes the marble on buildings and monmumens to deteriorate. Acid rain is a example of a secondary pollutant which is when two primary pollutants combine.

Another example of Secondary Pollutant (Smog)

Ozone Layer is a layer in the earth's stratosphere at an altitude of about 6.2 miles (10 km) containing a high concentration of ozone, which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS1.) Greenhouse Gases- This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone.2.) Ozone- a colorless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties, formed from oxygen by electrical discharges or ultraviolet light. It differs from normal oxygen (O2) in having three atoms in its molecule (O3).
